“When you turned down my proposal and left me, I was shocked. In my conceit, I never dreamed you would refuse me. Ten minutes or so elapsed before I came to my senses and realized I should not have let you leave alone. I told Nicholas what occurred next, and I believe you heard it from your cousin.”

With her throat too tight for speech, she nodded.

Mr. Darcy’s brow filled with lines. “When I searched the woods for your attacker, I reviewed what I had said to you. I was distraught when I realized what I had done. I declared my love for you, but in the next moment, I demonstrated no understanding of your nature by expecting you to distance yourself from people you hold dear. To make such a suggestion was wrong and callous of me, and I hope you will, in time, learn to forgive me.”

He reached out and covered Elizabeth’s hand. Without thinking, she reversed her hand to thread her fingers through his. She was rewarded by the slight upward turn of his lips.

“After everything I have told you, I could not blame you if you wished me to stay away from you. However, if you are so generous as to allow it, I intend to prove by my future words and actions that I am not as proud and prejudiced as I gave you reason to believe. It is my greatest desire to court you as is your due and, one day soon, convince you to accept me as your undeserving, though loving and devoted, husband. What say you, Elizabeth? Will you allow me this?”

The beseeching manner in which his eyes fixed upon her urged her past the lump in her throat. “I do not wish you away from me”—her voice grew low and breathless—“Fitzwilliam. In fact, I have desired to see you again ever since you rushed off on your horse yesterday so soon after I awoke next to you.” Flames of heat spread across her neck and face in the wake of her admission, and she lowered her head, unable to risk a glimpse of shock or censor marring his countenance.

“Elizabeth.”

His whisper of her name inflamed her senses like a caress.

“Can this be true? Despite my failing you yesterday in so many ways, you are willing to give me another chance? I am not worthy of you.” He gently lifted her chin so she met his eyes.

She swallowed her apprehension. “I pray you would not denigrate yourself. I should not have you speak so of the man I love.” Her heart propelled to a turbulent beat when Mr. Darcy fell to one knee before her.

He held both of her hands. “This is more than I dreamt possible after my many missteps. I love you more than I know how to express. I shall give you the proposal you deserve. Not today, but soon. What I have told you today must give you pause. I want you to have no doubts concerning my character.” He showered her hands with tender kisses.
